I noticed in the "tools" list for beginners, there is a special foot for a sewing machine that I don’t have. I have a very basic beginner machine.

I wife and two sisters are all quilters. They say all you need is a simple sewing machine that does a straight stitch. In fact you can do lap quilting where all of the sewing is done by hand. My wife has several quilts that she did just that way while watching TV at night.
If you are really interested in quilting, contact the local quilting guild where you live. They have ways to help beginners learn how to do things. Usually there is a fabric store or two nearby and they can put you in contact with the right people
